Languages
How do I change the language?
Preferences › Language. Choose English, Français, Deutsch or العربية. The whole app changes, including the recipes, the shopping list and the cooking steps. Arabic lays the app out right-to-left.
Can the app be in a different language from my phone?
Yes. The app keeps its own setting, so you can run your phone in English and the app in French if that is what your family is working on. It follows the phone until you choose otherwise.
Why does a new language wait until I reopen the app?
A language reaches every part of the app at once — the words, the dates, and for Arabic which way the screens run — and all of that is settled as the app opens. Choose the language, close the app, and it is there the next time you start it. Cooking a recipe in the language your child is learning works well: the vocabulary repeats, the pictures help, and there is something to show for it at the end.
What is The Table?
When the food is ready, the app helps you sit down together: a short list of jobs for laying the table, then three conversation cards — one about the dish or the place it comes from, one about your family, one just for fun — in the app's language. Open it from the end of cook mode, from a meal on your plan, or from the Together tab, even on a takeaway night. It also offers itself: between 5 and 11 p.m., on a day with a dinner planned, a card at the top of the Plan tab asks whether it is time to sit down together. Nothing you say or type at the Table leaves your phone.
How do I stop the evening card?
"Not tonight" hides it until tomorrow evening, and so does sitting down at the Table. To turn it off for good, switch off "Show the Together tab" in Preferences, under Family time. That also hides the Together tab and the children's jobs in recipes.
Planning the week
How does the app choose our meals?
It only considers recipes that fit your food rules, allergies, equipment, skill level and the time you have on each day. From those it picks the combination that best matches what you said you fancy, uses up what is already in your cupboard, shares fresh ingredients between meals so less is wasted, and stays within your budget. Tap Shuffle for a different week, or Swap on any single meal.
Can we choose the meals ourselves?
Yes. Tap "Build it myself" on the Plan tab and fill the slots from the recipe lists. Anything you leave empty, the app can fill in around your choices.
How do I change who is eating?
Your usual pattern lives in Preferences › Meals & diners. For a one-off week, open the weekly check-in and change "Who's eating?". Set a meal to 0 on a night you are out.
Cooking together
How does the app know what my children can do?
You tell it their ages in Preferences. Each step of a recipe then shows what a child of that age can safely take on. A younger child's job is never the hot part: boiling water, a hot pan, the oven and anything just out of it stay with a grown-up. From about 11, a child can take a supervised turn at the hob or the oven, such as stirring a pot or sliding a tray in, with a grown-up beside them. Deep-frying is never a child's job.
Is deep-frying safe for children to help with?
No, and the app never asks them to. For dishes like luqaimat the children weigh and whisk the batter and spoon it into the squeezy bottle, and an adult does every part near the oil.
Where do the Swiss and Emirati recipes come from?
They are written for this app rather than copied from anywhere. At the bottom of each one, "Where this comes from" tells the story of the dish and the place it comes from, and for many of them when families eat it. Every recipe in the library is halal: several Swiss classics are traditionally made with alcohol or pork, and where one has been adapted, "How ours is different" says so and explains what this version does instead, rather than pretending it is the original.
Shopping
Can the app order my shopping?
No. It prices the list, rounds it to real pack sizes and organises it — by aisle, or meal by meal — so it is quick to work through in any shop. It does not place orders or connect to a grocer. Tap "Share list" to send it by WhatsApp or anything else on the share sheet.
Why do some items say "(alcohol-free)"?
Some brands of things like Dijon mustard, chestnut purée, vanilla extract, gochujang and miso contain alcohol. The list names the alcohol-free version so you buy the one the recipe means: check the label in the shop.
Are the prices exact?
No — they are estimates based on typical UAE supermarket prices, so treat the budget as a guide. Enter what you actually spent when you finish the shop.
Your data
What does the app know about us?
Only what is on your own phone, and only you can see it. There is no account, no sign-in and no server — nothing is ever sent to us. See the privacy policy.
Is any of this connected to the school's systems?
No. It holds no student information and has no connection to iSAMS, ManageBac or anything else the school runs. It is a cooking app for families, nothing more.
How do I get a copy of, or erase, our data?
Preferences › Privacy & data. "Export my data" saves everything as a file you keep; "Erase everything" removes it from the device. Deleting the app also removes all of it.
